Receiving your thank you letter soon after the interview will reinforce the memory of your meeting and prompt the employer to take immediate action and to make a decision on your case. Its always a good idea to find out the name of the person who will be interviewing you so that you can ask for them by name and greet them appropriately. Make sure you are pronouncing it correctly (nobody likes to here their name pronounced incorrectly). Always research the company you are being interviewed by. Be prepared for questions like "so, what do you know about us?" or "why do you want to work for us?". Demonstrating your knowledge about a company/industry can often impress an employer. A handshake says a lot about a person. Try to avoid handshakes like the "limp fish" (shows anxiety and timidness), the "bone crusher" (can intimidate others) or the "pump" (too aggressive). Try to maintain a warm yet solid grip with just enough pressure to show self-confidence. Remember to smile. A friendly face is more pleasant than a grim one. Be enthusiastic. Let the employer know you are excited to be there and very interested in the position. Shut the door on your troubles. Avoid discussions about family or financial problems. Do not talk negatively about past employers/managers/supervisors. Focus on what you can do for the present employer. Remember to ask questions throughout your interview in order to show your interest in the job and in the company. Ask your questions clearly and without hesitation Always bring along a portfolio or folder with extra copies of your resume, letters of recommendation, a list of references, a paper and pen for notes, copies of pertinent certificates/diplomas, company information you have gathered, samples of your work (if applicable) and 3 or 4 questions you have prepared to ask the interviewer. If you have never been to your interview location before, allow time to figure out bus routes, or if you drive, to get out of traffic jams and to find parking. It is recommended that you arrive 15 minutes early for your interview. One should be presentable and appropriately dressed for a job interview. Dress the part
and remember; no running shoes, hats, blue jeans, track suits, heavy make-up or jewellry.
Its better to be over dressed than under dressed. |
